Summary
Lawyer, association executive, and federal appointee Togo Dennis West, Jr. was born on June 21, 1942 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In 1965, he earned his B.S. degree from Howard University. He entered Howard University Law School, graduating first in his class in 1968. In the United States Army, West was awarded the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service Medal. Appointed associate deputy attorney general in 1975, West served as general counsel to the Navy from 1977 to 1979; special assistant to the secretary and to the deputy secretary of defense in 1979; and general counsel to the United States Department of Defense from 1980 to 1981. In 1993, West was appointed United States Secretary of the Army and in 1998, United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs. West became President and CEO of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies in 2004. In 2006, he founded TLI Leadership Group and served as its Chairman.
