Summary
Author Valerie Wilson Wesley was born on November 22, 1947 in Ashford, Connecticut. She received her B.A. degree in 1970 from Howard University in Washington, D.C., as well as her M.A. degree from the Bank Street College of Education and a M.A. degree from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, both in New York City, New York. Wesley began her career working as ssociate editor of Scholastic News from 1970 to 1972. She joined New York's Essencemagazine as travel editor in 1988, becoming senior editor in 1990, executive editor in 1992, and contributing editor and writer from 1994 to 1997. In 2005, Wesley served as artist-in-residence at Columbia College in Chicago, Illinois. In 2013, she served as adjunct professor at Ramapo College of New Jersey in Mahwah, New Jersey. She also served on the board of directors of the Newark Arts Council in Newark, New Jersey.
