Summary
Nonprofit executive John H. Finney was born on October 31, 1938, in Savannah, Georgia. He attended Alfred Ely Beach High School, where he graduated in 1957. Finney earned his B.S. degree in sociology from Savannah State College in 1967, after spending two years in the U.S. army, and his M.A. degree in sociology from Atlanta University in 1971. He was a mentee of Savannah civil rights leader W.W. Law, and a member of the NAACP Youth Council in Savannah from a young age. He joined the Equal Opportunity Authority for Savannah-Chatham County Area Inc. (EOA) in 1967, working until he enrolled in graduate school in 1969. After graduating, Finney served as acting executive director at the EOA for one year in 1972, and was named executive director in 1973. Finney would go on to serve as executive director of EOA for 44 years, retiring in 2017.
