Summary
Manuscript volume of notes, formulas, and recipes on the preparation of paints, varnishes, oils, and other items, by an unidentified compiler. The volume is written in black ink, in a single hand. Topics include: directions on oil paintings; how to make Indian ink; preparation of colors for painting on velvet; colors that will stand and not change for a great length of time; varnish for prints or drawings; how to prepare water colors; liquid blacking; and how to clean oil paintings. While the volume is mainly concerned with topics related to painting, there are also entries on apple trees, oil for polishing furniture, preparing the oil of roses, dyeing horse hair lines, and liquid for roof tops. The volume is accompanied by five unbound sheets of varying sizes, some folded, with notes on dyeing horse hair lines, making inks, preparing cloth for oil painting, using varnish, and preparing water colors. The note on making inks appears to be in a hand different from that of the volume and the other notes.
