Biographical / Historical Note
The San Quentin Jazz Band was made up of inmates at the California State Prison at San Quentin in Marin County, California. The band performed live on the San Francisco radio station KFRC in 1941 and 1942. Each radio broadcast began with the band playing the song Time On My Hands.
Summary
Two photographs of the San Quentin Jazz Band during a live radio broadcast, taken by an unidentified photographer, circa 1941-1942. Images depict San Quentin Music Department Supervisor Ted P. Stanich, 18 members of the band, and 18 chorus members. Photographs are mounted on a folded sheet with a hand-stenciled cover and is signed "Best wishes, Johnny White".
