Many of the sketches are signed or initialed by Hearne.

Biographical / Historical Note
Edmund Hearne (or Hearn) (active 18th century) was Irish. He and his brother Henry arrived at the English College in Douai, France from the Jesuit College of St. Omer in Bruges, Belgium in October 1773. They were sent to live in the community of English Benedictine monks at St. Gregory's in Douai, France in December 1774.

One sketchbook containing circa 87 drawings and paintings in chalk, pencil, pen and ink and wash, and watercolor, by Edmund Hearne, 1780. Hearne was likely a student at the school run by the monks at St. Gregory's, Douai, France when he created the sketches under the instruction of Mr. Coyeaux. The subjects depicted include: animals, including birds, dogs, and horses; buildings; studies of facial expressions and emotions, each labeled in ink; figure and costume studies; flowers; landscapes; pastoral scenes; and portraits of men and women. One of the drawings depicting a man is labeled "The college dress of the English monks".
