Summary
Published in The Guardian on 1 November 2019. After months of parliamentary stalemate over the issue of Brexit, Boris Johnson finally got his way and a vote ot hold a general election on December 12th was passed. It turned out to be a disastrous move for the opposition parties to agree to. In the election of 2017, when both major paries had agreed to respect the result of the 2016 referendum, Jeremy Corbyn had far outperformd expectations and increased his vote and tally of MPs substantially. Corbyn replacing Pitt in a parody of Gillray's print entitled "An excrescence, a fungus, alias, A toadstool upon a dung-hill", published 20 December 1791. Cf.
