Biographical / Historical Note
The Denham was an Indiaman ship commanded by William Tryon. On March 31, 1760, the British burned the Denham to prevent its capture by the French during the invasion of Fort Marlborough, Sumatra.
Summary
Collection contains letters and documents relating to the burning of the Indiaman Denham and capture of Fort Marlborough, later Bengkulu, Sumatra and the aftermath. Includes a letter from A. Fraser to his cousin Michael Impey; a personal narrative by William Tryon; and letters addressed to Benjamin Way and Lewis Way from Heaton & Venables regarding their financial interest in the Denham.
