Biographical / Historical Note
Alexander Gordon (1715-1797) and James Gordon (1706?-1790) were brothers from Letterfourie, Scotland. They began trading Madeira wine in 1730 and built Letterfourie House in Rathven, Scotland in 1773. Alexander had three sons: Alexander (1781-1810), Charles (1785-1805), and James (1779-1843).
Summary
Correspondence and financial papers relating to members of the Gordon family of Letterfourie, Scotland. Includes receipts for household items made out to Susan Gordon and Anna Gordon; bills and documents made out to James Gordon; bills made out to Alexander Gordon relating to housework done at Letterfourie House; and receipts to the Rathven schoolmaster for school supplies and clothes for his sons Alexander, Charles, and James Gordon. Also includes bills and receipts made out to Alexander and James for landscaping work at Letterfourie House; a manuscript map of land where Letterfourie was built; and an invoice for provisions during a stay by an unidentified merchant in Canton, China, partly written in Chinese.
