Biographical / Historical Note
Charles Montagu, 1st Duke of Manchester (1660?-1722), an early supporter of William III, served as ambassador extraordinary to Venice in 1697-98 and 1707-08, and to the court of France from 1699 to 1701. He succeeded to his father's earldom as the 4th Earl of Manchester in 1683, and was created 1st Duke of Manchester in 1719. A member of the privy council from 1696, he died in 1722.
Summary
Manuscript notebook, in an unidentified hand, documenting the rental and valuation of the Earl of Manchester's estates in Essex and Huntingdonshire (later incorporated into Cambridgeshire), circa 1683. Included are lists of tenants' names, along with the amount of land leased and the yearly rents paid on multiple estates in Essex and Huntingdonshire; a valuation of Kimbolton Castle, including the furnishings, artwork, and game and game-birds; and the total yearly value of the estates in Essex and Huntingdonshire. Accompanied by a receipt for the notebook from bookseller Stanley Crowe, Ltd. made out to the Cambridgeshire County Archivist, and a letter from the archivist claiming an inaccurate description and returning the notebook. Also accompanied by a blank ledger book, inscribed "Mrs. Jenkins's Bk. 1811" on the front cover; laid into the book are 17 letters to Mary Jenkins and her husband Henry Jenkins from other members of the Jenkins family, dated circa 1799-1829.
