Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was a Scottish author.
Andrew Chatto (1841-1913) was an English book publisher. In 1873, he founded the publishing firm Chatto & Windus with his partner William Edward Windus.
Summary
Four autograph letters, signed, from Robert Louis Stevenson to Andrew Chatto and Chatto & Windus. Three letters to Chatto include Stevenson's proposal and subsequent planning for a collection of his short stories, published by Chatto & Windus in 1887 as The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables. Stevenson also discusses his book, Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes. Also includes a letter from Stevenson listing the names and addresses of eleven people he would like the publisher to send copies of The Merry Men to.
