Biographical / Historical Note
The Stud is an LGBTQ bar in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1966 by George Matson and Alexis Muir, the bar hosts drag, musical, and other performances, and is a fixture of the local leather scene.
Summary
Circa 515 pinback buttons relating to LGBTQ and leather culture in San Francisco, California, 1970s-1990s. Circa 197 of the buttons relate to Stud bar and events that patrons participated in, including holiday celebrations, the Folsom Street Fair, and other parties. The remaining circa 318 buttons relate to additional LGBTQ-related activities, establishments, events, and organizations in San Francisco, including: Ramrod, Circus Circus, and other bars; local elections and politicians, including Harvey Milk; community, political, and social organizations, including Gay Men's Health Crisis, Inc., the Imperial Court of San Francisco, the Mattachine Society, and the NAMES Project; motorcycle clubs, including the California Motorcycle Club; political activism around LGBTQ rights, HIV/AIDS, safer sex, and the movie Cruising; and events, including balls and other dances, the Folsom Street Fair, the Gay Games, and San Francisco's Gay Freedom Day Parade and Celebration.
