Biographical / Historical Note
Alexander Gordon (1715-1797) and James Gordon (1706?-1790) were brothers from Letterfourie, Scotland. They began trading Madeira wine in 1730.
Summary
74 autograph letters, signed, addressed to and received by Alexander and James Gordon regarding business matters. Letters discuss trading wine from Madeira; finding sources of flax; and a shipment of enslaved people from the Guinea Company. Contains correspondence between Alexander and James Gordon, as well as letters from John Champe; James Duff, Earl of Fife; Sir Charles Henry Frankland; Mayne, Burn and Mayne; Alexander Ogilvie; and James Ogilvie. Also includes indentures, a memorandum, and a printed copy of the Calcutta Exchange Gazette, 1838.
