Biographical / Historical Note
Phelps & Sanford was the partnership of merchants--and brothers-in-law--Peleg Sanford (1744-1802) and Timothy Phelps (1757-1812) (Yale 1780). Phelps continued the New Haven, Connecticut firm following Sanford’s death in 1802, but became bankrupt in 1806 and removed to New York City.
