Biographical / Historical Note
Abiel Holmes (1763-1837) (Yale 1783) was minister at the Congregational Church in Midway, Georgia from 1784 to 1791. In 1792, he became the minister at First Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Three manuscript sermons, unsigned, given by Abiel Holmes to the Congregational Church in Midway, Gerogia, 1786-1788. Bible verses referenced include 1 John 4, Hebrews 12:29, and Psalm 89:9. Holmes discusses God and love, God’s wrath on His enemies, and the duty of God’s people in the time of calamity.
Sermon delivered 1788 January 4 is identified as following the “calamities occasioned by the war with the Indians.”
