Continuation of: Beyond words: illuminated manuscripts in Boston collections (Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts : McMullen Museum of Art, Boston College, 2016).
The papers published in this volume were delivered at the international scholarly conference accompanying the exhibition Beyond Words: Illuminated Manuscripts in Boston Collections, mounted simultaneously in the autumn of 2016 at three venues: Houghton Library, Harvard University (which focused on the monastic library); the McMullen Museum of Art, Boston College (the layman's library); and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (the Italian humanist's library).
Summary
"This abundantly illustrated volume, a companion to the exhibition Beyond Words: Illuminated Manuscripts in Boston Collections and its accompanying catalogue, aims to provide a broad overview of patterns of patronage and book production over the course of the High and late Middle Ages based on the eclectic holdings of Boston-area institutions. The essays, all relating to the history of the book, cover a wide range of topics, and the approaches adopted by the contributors are as varied as the materials they study. The result is not simply a wealth of fascinating insights into individual illuminated books, their makers, and their readers, but also an indication of how much remains to be learned about the materials to which the exhibition served as no more than an introduction."-- Provided by publisher.
