Biographical / Historical Note
Daniel Mathew (1718 or 1719-1777) of Essex, England, married Penelope Smith (1723-1756) on 1736 February 4. The couple separated in 1742 and divorced in 1745 on account of Penelope Mathew’s alleged adultery with William Buckley ( -1754). Daniel Mathew’s father, William Mathew, was Governor of the Leeward Islands. In 1750, Daniel Mathew married Mary Elizabeth Byam ( -1814) of Antigua.
Summary
Eight manuscript legal documents and three broadsides concerning the separation and divorce of Daniel Mathew and Penelope Mathew, 1742-1745. Included are bills, deeds of separation, and acts. Materials pertain to property--including enslaved people--and follow the legislation of English colony Saint Christopher (also known as Saint Kitts).
