Biographical / Historical Note
George Berkeley (1685-1753), Anglo-Irish philosopher. In 1731 September, Berkeley donated his library and his plantation in Newport, Rhode Island, to Yale University. The donation doubled Yale’s library holdings.
Henry Newman (1670-1743), Massachusetts-born convert to Anglicanism who spent most of his professional life in England.
Summary
Autograph letter, signed, from George Berkeley to Henry Newman thanking Newman for a parcel of books, 1730 March 29. Berkeley also comments on the “growth of Atheism and Irreligion” in England and adds that “Political societies have their diseases as well as natural bodies and this seems that which will be the death of Great Britain.”
