Summary
"Highly popular in South Africa, Hallelujah! (premiered in 2002) is the play 'black audiences hate to love' as author Xoli Norman puts it. The narrative is deceptively simple as it follows the ordinary lives of one black family. We experience them at home, and in a jazz club in the huge, sprawling township of Soweto (now part of Greater Johannesburg). But within this seemingly simple narrative of family life, love and generation conflict lies a vision of life full of vivid, extremely personal experiences forged in the death throes of apartheid. However, after this, many have come to feel abandoned by the new structures of power as their dreams and hopes have not be fulfilled (e.g. lack of delivery on poverty, running water, electricity, housing, sanitation, education, crime, unemployment, corruption)."--Introduction.
