Summary
After an undisputed reign at the peak of Hong Kong's film industry in the 1960s, Shaw Brothers (the studio founded by real-life brothers Run Run and Runme Shaw) found their dominance challenged by up-and-coming rivals in the early 1970s. They swiftly responded by producing hundreds of the most iconic action films ever made, revolutionizing the genre through the backbreaking work of top-shelf talent on both sides of the camera as well as unbeatable widescreen production value, much of it shot at 'Movietown', their huge, privately-owned studio on the outskirts of Hong Kong. This inaugural collection by Arrow Video presents twelve jewels from the Shaw crown, all released within the 1970s. From kickass kung fu killers to crazy kaiju knockoffs to culture clash comedies, this carefully curated selection of Shaw Brothers classics merely represents the tip of the iceberg of the studio's rich output.
King boxer: Two martial arts schools prepare for an important tournament.
The boxer from Shantung: Leaving the poverty of his life in Shantung to seek fortune in Shanghai, The Boxer is instead drawn into a world of corruption, gang warfare and evil where his only protection is his famed fighting technique.
Five Shaolin masters: Five students escape from the destruction of their beloved Shaolin Temple. Now each must take revenge and train in their own separate fighting styles.
Shaolin temple: The Shaolin Temple is the last place to resist defeat by the Manchu Dynasty, mostly because of their unique fighting style. As the Abbot becomes older, he realizes that the Manchus are determined to destroy the temple and eradicate the Shaolin fighting techniques. To this end, he decides that it is time at last to admit worthy men into the temple as students, to learn the way of Shaolin.
The Mighty Peking Man: A giant Himalayan beast tries to save a beautiful woman from a sleazy show-biz promoter.
Challenge of the masters: After his father refuses to teach him kung fu and he is constantly being beaten by rival school students, a young Wong Fei Hung must train under Luk Ah Choy to avenge the evils being done by the rival school.
Executioners from Shaolin: A couple unite - she is fluent in the crane style of kung fu, he in tiger style. They have a son, but the boy's father is killed by the evil eunuch Bai Mei. Disguised as a girl, his mom trains him in crane style while he secretly learns tiger style from his father's training manual.
Chinatown kid: After getting in trouble with local gangs, a young man flees to San Francisco, where the same gangs are still causing problems. He becomes a part of one gang, and eventually decides to play them against each other in order to clean up the town.
The Five Venoms: The final student of a dying martial arts master is instructed to locate the previous five students and defeat any evil ones among them.
Crippled avengers: Three men, crippled by an evil warlord, become friends and learn kung fu with the help of an old teacher and his brain-damaged pupil.
Heroes of the East: A Chinese man marries a Japanese woman through an arranged marriage and manages to insult all of her Japanese martial arts family by issuing a challenge to her that is misinterpreted by the others. He must then prove how good Chinese Kung Fu really is through a series of duels with the seven Japanese martial artists who come to meet the challenge.
Dirty Ho: A prince enlists a thief to serve as his bodyguard to protect him from assassins.
