Biographical / Historical Note
Provo was a Dutch anarchist counterculture movement that existed circa 1965-1972. The movement aimed to create social change through non-violence and absurdist humor. Founding members included Robert Jasper Grootveld, Roel van Duijn, and Rob Stolk.
Igno Cuypers is a Dutch photographer.
Robert Jasper Grootveld (1932-2009) was a Dutch artist and activist who became involved in the Provo movement.
Cor Jaring (1936-2013) was a Dutch photographer, photojournalist, and conceptual artist.
Summary
The collection includes photographs, printed ephemera, and other material relating to the Provo movement in Amsterdam, circa 1960s-1980s. Photographic prints by Maarten Brinkgreve, Cor Jaring, and Koen Wessing document: performance art and happenings by artists including Robert Jasper Grootveld, Yoshio Nakajima, Max Reneman, Rob Stolk, L. van der Zalm, and others; early meetings of the Provo group; anti-monarchist demonstrations by Stolk during the royal wedding of Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands and Claus van Amsberg; and other people and activities relating to the Provo movement. Also includes: three photographs by Igno Cuypers of Grootveld in his K-Tempel construction, taken 1963, printed in the 1980s; photographs and a program containing a musical score and texts relating to the activities and performances of the Insektesektion, an environmentalist group that included artists Theo Kley, van der Zalm, Reneman, and others; two printed flyers for performances and happenings; a group of mail art created from postcards and dye diffusion transfer prints, along with a small group of manuscript notes ("Klaas checks") sent from Grootveld in the guise of the character Santa Claus ("Sinterklaas" in Dutch) to Henk J. Meier; and a collection of books, ephemera, and clippings relating to Cor Jaring.
