Bakkehusene is the story of Denmark's first townhouse development in the 20th century. The building is located at the foot of Bellahøj in Copenhagen and contains 171 townhouses - all with front and back gardens. When the Bakkehusene were built in 1921, they caused a great stir because they were only on one floor and built as homes for one family, in contrast to the terraced houses of the 19th century, where several families lived together in one house. The Bakkehusene were designed by the architects Ivar Bentsen and Thorkild Henningsen. Based on the market towns' traditional attached houses and using traditional materials such as bricks, tiles and wood, they created a modern building on a humane scale with well-proportioned and usable spaces, both outside and inside. When the conservation authorities decided in 1981 to preserve the building, because it was an example of a particularly excellent townhouse development from the beginning of the 20th century. The book unfolds the story of the Bakke houses' history, architecture, residents and the sensational conservation. It also contains an interview with Minister of the Interior and Housing Kaare Dybvad, MF Uffe Elbæk and director of KAB Jens Elmelund about what we can learn from the Bakkehusene. The book is richly illustrated with archive material and new footage by award-winning photographer Tine Harden
