Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was an American novelist. From 1853-1857, Hawthorne served as consul at the United States Consulate in Liverpool, England.

Printed consular document, completed in manuscript by Nathaniel Hawthorne during his role as consul of the United States of America in Liverpool, England. The document states that George Marsh Humphrey, master of the bark Sumter of Charleston, South Carolina, appeared before Hawthorne at the consulate in Liverpool, and that the ship is to sail on to the United States. The document then lists the names of five crew members who deserted during the journey, along with the names, citizenship, wages, age and height of the six crew members who continued to sail with the ship.
