Biographical / Historical Note
Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was an English author, best known for his Dictionary of the English Language (1755) and his Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets (1779-1781).
Hester Lynch Piozzi (1741-1821), also known as Hester Thrale, was an English author and diarist. She published one of the first biographies of Samuel Johnson, Anecdotes of the Late Samuel Johnson (1786).
Summary
Autograph manuscript letter, signed, to Hester Lynch Piozzi, concerning Samuel Johnson's plans to return to London from Ashbourne; he also mentions Piozzi's daughters Susy (Susanna) and Lucy, and his state of health. Accompanied by a typescript transcription and bibliographic essay on the letter by an unidentified author.
