German six-fold, backless puzzle binding, also known as a Vexierbuch, tease binding, or reliure à surprise. One cover gold-tooled brown leather over pasteboards, with red leather onlays; second cover brown leather over pasteboards, painted in imitation of gold tooling, now somewhat abraded. Fore edges gilt and gauffered with paintings of the four Evangelists, King David, and the Virgin and Child. Text block is blank. Three pastedowns from an unidentified 17th-century German manuscript.
