Biographical / Historical Note
Gilbert de Clare, 8th Earl of Gloucester and 7th Earl of Hertford (1291-1314) was an English nobleman and military commander who was a strong supporter of King Edward I in his struggle with the barons. A leader in the defense of the northern border against the Scots, he was killed at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
Elizabeth (De Burgh) Clare (1295-1360), youngest sister of Gilbert de Clare, inherited a share of his property and was for most of her life one of the wealthiest landholders in England and Ireland. Her gift funded the endowment of Clare Hall, later Clare College, Cambridge.
