Biographical / Historical Note
Princess Dorothea Lieven (1785-1857) was a Baltic German noblewoman. Married to Prince Christoph Heinrich von Lieven (1774-1838), Minister Plenipotentiary from Russia to the Court of St. James from 1812 to 1834, she established influential political and social salons in London and Paris.
Comtesse Margaret de Flahault de la Billardrie (1788-1867) was a British society hostess and advisor to Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales. In 1817, she married the French statesman Comte Charles de Flahault de la Billardrie (1785-1870). They had five daughters, including Emily Jane de Flahault (1819-1895), later Emily Jane Petty-Fitzmaurice, Marchioness of Lansdowne, following her 1843 marriage to Lord Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice (1816-1866).
