Summary
"Stories and poetry. Includes at least one poem translated from the German of Heinrich Hoffmann. Cover title. Series statement at head of title. Degen, Estes & Co. published in Boston from 1865 to 1866. Contains four works of slightly differing heights, bound in stiff-paper wrapper with paper labels on front and back (as issued?). "The house that Jack built" has printed paper wrapper, printed in red and black ink. Some wood-engraved illustrations printed in color; others hand-colored. There is a good chance that these latter three works were not published by Degen, Estes & Co.; the illustrations and typography match part of an edition of a story book compilation published by the New York firm McLoughlin Bros., Inc. ca. 1867. In the case of the McLoughlin Bros. book, Henry Walker Herrick is acknowledged as the illustrator, and Edward P. Cogger as the engraver. (Cf. Tom the thief, call no. McL-Pam T655 L955 1867.) Wood-engraved illustration p. [17] signed "Cogger sc." (i.e., Edward P. Cogger?)."
