"A glance at a little girl's primer, in which poor rhymes, false measure, bad English, and worse pictures, seemed calculated to lower all love and taste for the beautiful and graceful, suggested the accompanying fairy tale, in which I have endeavored to weave pleasant associations around the first lesson of childhood."--preface, p.
