Biographical / Historical Note
Alma Porter Flynn (1891- ) was a Black woman who moved with her family from Oklahoma to Los Angeles during the Great Migration. Her father, Dr. John E. Porter, was one of the founders of Dunbar Hospital, the first Black-owned hospital in Los Angeles. She married Ernest Flynn prior to the 1930 census.
Summary
One photograph album with 323 black-and-white photographs documenting the activities of Alma Porter Flynn, her family, her husband Ernest Flynn's family, and their friends in California, as well as during trips to Oklahoma, Canada and Texas, from 1929 to 1961 (bulk 1929-1946). The album contains black-and-white photographs that measure 15 x 9 cm and smaller; many include identifying captions. These images depict time spent with family, friends and pets, primarily outdoors, as well as the Dunbar School in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, and Flynn's mother's grave at Paradise Memorial cemetery. Photographers unidentified.
