Biographical / Historical Note
The 369th Infantry Regiment, originally formed as the 15th New York National Guard Regiment, was primarily comprised of African Americans. Known as the Harlem Hellfighters, the regiment was commanded by Colonel William Hayward during World War I.
Henri Gouraud (1867-1946) was a French general during World War I.
Summary
Printed brochure commemorating a reception held in honor of General Henri Gouraud’s visit to the 7th Regiment Armory, held by the 369th Infantry Regiment and Colonel Arthur West Little in New York City, August 13, 1923. The brochure contains a reproduction of a portrait photograph of Gouraud on the cover; a list of officers who served in the 369th Infantry between July 15, 1917-March 1, 1919; and excerpts of two letters from Gouraud from July 7 and 16, 1918. Also includes photograph reproductions of Little and other officers, Gouraud’s arrival, the military band performing, and a portrait of James R. Europe, who served as band leader from 1917-1919. Also includes an autograph manuscript inscription from Gouraud to Little on the cover and an autograph manuscript inscription from Hayward to Little on the second page.
