Summary
"For their debut at the Prague Spring International Music Festival, Les Siècles and Bertrand Chamayou celebrate the bicentennial of Franco-Belgian composer César Franck. As a teacher at the Paris Conservatory of Music, César Franck was a forward thinking composer and often credited with reviving French symphonic composition. Opening with the symphonic poem Le Chasseur Maudit (The Cursed Hunter), Franck's work is recontextualised in the presence of Debussy's later work - La Mer. Composed just 20 years apart, Franck's influence on his contemporary becomes apparent to the ears. Performing on a McNulty 1860 French piano, Bertrand Chamayou's Variations symphoniques for Piano and Orchestra highlights the dulcet tones of the orchestra's historical instruments. The program finishes with Franck's three part Symphony in D minor, a controversial work in its time and largely forgotten in modern concert halls. Mixing French and post-Wagnerian German compositional style, the symphony remains an important work to this day. Kim Hunter".
