Summary
"Maria João Pires performs Robert Schumann's only Piano Concerto under the baton of John Elliott Gardiner and the London Symphony Orchestra. This concerto finds itself strangely at home between Felix Mendelssohn's works: the Hebrides Overture and his "Scottish" Symphony no.3. The bond between Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn, two great romantic composers, goes far beyond historical cohabitation. Schumann's Piano Concerto was premiered by an historical icon and coincidentally his wife, Clara Schumann, and conducted by close friend and collaborator Felix Mendelssohn. Both Robert, Clara and Felix were well documented friends and mutual sources of inspiration. Mendelssohn's own works the Hebrides Overture and the Symphony no.3 were dedicated to Queen Victoria after making her acquaintance on one of his many trips to England. Kim Hunter".
