Summary
"As our heroine makes her way around the circumference of the chthonic contraption dominating the stage, we are plunged into Elektra's universe. Not an inch of color greets us this evening on the stage of the Grand Théâtre de Genève, only the infernal machine turning incessantly as the drama unfolds. This one act opera by Richard Strauss is told by the tortured Elektra as her grief for her murdered father turns to vengeance. With roots in Greek mythology, Hugo von Hofmannsthal's libretto recites how Elektra, daughter of Agamemnon, saves the life of her brother before turning to seek vengeance on her murderous mother. Elektra is a character often used as a metaphor for guilt, grief or poisonous revenge, even with her own self-titled Jungian analysis. The staging is unmistakably the work of Ulrich Rasche, a cult set designer in the German speaking world known for his mechanical industrialist designs. His minimalistic set leaves space for Strauss's signature sound painting to illustrate the story. Elektra, Ingela Brimberg, is the centerpiece for this exhausting performance as characters interact with her while she circles, tethered to the stage in constant revolution with Rasche's machine. Between the dissonant, demonstrative music and the infernal machine, the audience is left to freely interpret the unfolding events. A story of revenge and intergenerational conflict, Elektra's oath to kill her mother and her mothers lover is fulfilled but leaves her collapsed, lifeless on stage. Kim Hunter."
