Summary
""Humble, self questioning and introspective" is how the Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire was once described. An artist who avoided the limelight, but who shone so brightly when on stage. Hear Freire in this bewitching interpretation of Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor accompanied by the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, conducted by their musical director Jonathan Nott. Far from being the most flamboyant of the Romantic piano concertos, this work contains magical moments of contemplation and reflection. During the summers of 1884 and 1885 Brahms took himself away to the Alps to work on his fourth and final symphony. What he produced was a rich, complex work, often regarded as the most melancholy of his symphonies. Eduard Hanslick, the Austrian music critic said of this symphony "It is like a dark well; the longer we look into it, the more brightly the stars shine back." The OSR truly makes this jewel of the Romantic repertoire shine. Rachel Rowntree".
