These reproductions of watercolours have been selected from a book by Pavel Svinin (1787-1839), a Russian diplomatic officer, artist and author. They depict scenes of life amongst free blacks in Philadelphia, where Svinin was stationed at the Russian consulate between 1811 and 1813.
