Summary
Describing travel mostly along the coasts of Spain, France, and Italy, both in large cities and through small towns, this diary gives much information about economic and agricultural conditions, geography, military and naval matters, food and wine, antiquities, and numismatics. It contains a full itinerary of sites visited, prices paid, etc., in Barcelona, Tortosa, Castillo, Narbonne, Montpellier, Avignon, Aix, Marseilles, Toulon, Nice, Frejus, Monaco, Genoa, Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Rome, Naples, Ravenna, Padua, Vicenza, Verona, Bologna, Turin, and places en route. At the end of the volume are rubbings of many coins, some recipes, and notes on banking and purchases. The author travelled with a Mr Clarke, Mr Adams, and Mr Cochrane. He also names many people with whom he stayed, dined, or spoke, including Mr Thompson; Mr Otway; Thomas Earle; Thomas Hodgson; Charles Hadfield; James Russel; John Murray; Charles Bingham; 1st Baron Lucan; Mr Cowper; George Keate; Mr Swete; Francis Hastings, 10th Earl of Huntingdon; Daniel Webb; and Sir Horace Mann. When the diary ends, the author was travelling with Charles Hope-Weir, who had come to Italy with Robert Adam. The author also refers to a number of the guidebooks he used, including those of Thomas Nugent, Joseph Addison, Edward Wright, and Maximilien Misson.
