Summary
In 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission that the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which protects freedom of speech, prohibits the government from restricting independent expenditures for political communications by corporations, labor unions, nonprofit groups, and other organizations. This decision changed the political landscape in the United States, giving rise to "Super PACS"-large political action committees-that raise and spend massive amounts of money for campaigns and candidates. Supporters of Citizens United argue that it upholds free speech, encourages multiple and diverse voices to enter the political arena, and broadens the range of discourse by enabling groups to freely express their views and back candidates and policies. Opponents of Citizens United argue that it gives corporations, special interest groups, and rich individuals a disproportionate influence on American politics, drowning out the voices of ordinary citizens and eroding the principles of equality and fair representation.
