Summary
In recent years, the United States has seen a surge in the number of immigrants and asylum seekers at its borders. The proposed Secure the Border Act aims to enforce stricter controls and limitations on immigration and, if passed, would affect refugees, immigrant children, employers, and individuals overstaying visas. The U.S. House of Representatives, led by Republicans, passed the bill in May 2023, but the U.S. Senate, led by Democrats, has not yet acted on it. Senate Republicans urge pairing the bill with additional military aid to Ukraine and other U.S. allies. Supporters of the Save the Border Act argue it will improve national security and modernize border infrastructure. Opponents argue that it will hurt vulnerable populations, divide families, and undermine America's heritage as a nation of immigrants. Should Congress pass the Secure the Border Act?Audio only.
