"Arabic literature has a distinguished tradition of bacchanals but none are so consistently entertaining, explicit or iconoclastic as those of Abu Nuwas al-Hasan ibn Hani al-Hakami (c. 756 - c. 815), the 'bad boy' of Abbasid poetry."
