Summary
"Walking onto the sunlit stage in Spier, South Africa, Zandile Mzazi graciously greets her sunhatted audience before launching into a moving aria. When she starts to sing we are immediately struck by her ease in the high registers and dynamic range. Mzazi switches effortlessly between languages and styles, captivating the crowd with her expressive vocals and presence on stage despite the blistering South African summer weather. This concert pays homage to Sibongile Khumalo, South Africa's former First Lady of Song and great influence to Mzazi, who passed away in '21. Performing around the world, notably in Austria, Italy and England, Mzazi is known for her promotion of African classical music. Mzazi performs effortless interpretations of classics such as 'Summertime' and a particularly moving version of the african lullaby 'Thula Mama'. The petite soprano, clad perfectly for a summer concert, is accompanied by duo Yohan Chun and Francois Botha on piano and double bass who also perform cheerful interludes on various instruments.
