Title
Shabaka & The Ancestors - Live at Moods / Ariel Zomonsky, Tumi Mogorosi, Siyabonga Mthembu, Shabaka Hutchings, Gontse Makhene, Mthunzi Mvubu.
Summary
"Shabaka Hutchings is one of the standout musicians in a new London jazz generation, one that is made so vibrant by the multiculturalism that drives it. When he signed for Impulse! A year after this 2017 concert took place, it made him a signifier for this sound and a force for jazz internationally. One of the reasons for this lies in his multifarious outlook: his three main groups follow pretty different strands. While the Sons of Kemet trace pathways through the Caribbean diaspora, searching for, and connecting, identities as they go, his trio, The Comet is Coming, deliver full-throttle futuristic electronic jazz. Shabaka and the Ancestors, who grace the Moods stage here, are spiritual in their outlook, seeking to transmit the Wisdom of the Elders (title of their debut album, released in 2016). After spending time in Johannesburg, and learning about its rich musical heritage, he collaborated with South African musicians and sought to place his vision within their cultural context. The result is ""one tenor sax, one alto sax, one trumpet. One on vocals, one on ivory, one bass, one on percussion and one the drums. 800 million voices. 700 years. Millions of bones cracking under the weight of 22 false free years. Innumerable tiny sparks. One uncontrollable blaze."**Rowan Standish Hayes**".
