Summary
Trivitron is the largest indigenous medical devices company in India. Although it started as a mere distributor of medical equipment and accessories two decades ago, due to its focused efforts, Trivitron has successfully moved up the value chain and is presently engaged in research and development as well as in manufacturing. As Trivitron expands rapidly into international and domestic markets it faces numerous challenges such as increasing competition from multinational companies, an unfavorable domestic business environment for medical device manufacturers, and talent drain. This case encourages students to assess the Trivitron business-level strategy and to determine if Trivitron can maintain its core competences as it expands. Can these competences continue to help the company maintain its successful growth strategy?
