Summary
This case focuses on Seeding Labs, a small nonprofit organization in Boston, Massachusetts, whose flagship program, Instrumental Access, takes surplus laboratory equipment from pharmaceutical and other end-users and donates it to universities and research institutes in developing countries. As she onboards a new business development intern, CEO Melissa Wu is evaluating some challenges facing Seeding Labs' growth strategy: how to attract more corporate donors of surplus biopharmaceutical equipment, and how to better align its evidence-based outcomes with donors' sustainability goals, in order to strengthen its value proposition. The overall goal of the case is to introduce students to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and examine the complexities and tradeoffs in measuring and communicating companies' sustainability impacts. It also explores the role of social entrepreneurs in launching innovative sustainability business models, and the challenges they face in scaling operations.
