Summary
It was as a dangerous sport that parachuting first came into vogue. Amazingly, it began some 200 years ago, soon after the French Montgolfier brothers had successfully developed the hot air balloon. It was from one of these that the first parachute descent was made in October, 1797. Frenchman André-Jaques Garnerin rode in a gondola beneath that of the balloon piloted by his brother. By the end of the 19th century balloons were widely used as military observation platforms as well as being flown for pleasure. But parachute jumps from them proved to be a particular crowd pleaser, even when the chute carried a mere wooden crate.
