Siegfried Bettmann's stated aim: "I have mentioned more than once that I do not intend to write a history book, nor even a historical essay, but in the autobiography of a man whose mind and feelings from time to time were influenced by outward political, economical and historical events, those events which exercised the greatest influence on his being must be recorded".

Summary
Description: Reminiscences written in the 193s. Volume 1 includes details of Siegfried Bettmann's upbringing, education and family in Germany, time spent in Frankfurt, Antwerp and Paris before 1914, his emigration to London, friendships, romantic attachments, commercial travels around Europe, and the move to Coventry and setting up of the Triumph Cycle Co. in partnership with Mr Schulte in 1886. Also discussed are events around Europe in the 189s, including details of the various European royal families, increasing anti-Semitism, and the anti-German propaganda being spread around Europe. Also included are excerpts and translations of letters received by Bettmann from his family and friends throughout this period.
