Biographical / Historical Note
George Harbridge, a schoolteacher at the Red River Settlement, Manitoba, traveled from England to North America in 1820 and returned home in 1825.
Summary
The journal describes an 1820 voyage from England to Manitoba by way of Hudson's Bay and overland from York Fort to the Red River Colony. George Harbridge traveled on the Hudson's Bay Co.'s ship Eddystone with Rev. John West, a company chaplain. Harbridge writes about life in the colony, marriage, troubles with Rev. Jones who succeeded Rev. West, and his return trip to England in 1825. There is an extract of a letter from Jones to Harbridge at the end of the journal.
