Biographical / Historical Note
The Commission consisted of E. B. Taylor, president, Charles E. Bowles, secretary, Frank Lehmer, assistant secretary, R. N. McLaren, and Thomas Wistar, who met in Omaha in May 1866. They reassembled at Fort Laramie in June where they were joined by Col. H. E. Maynadier.
Summary
The proceedings record in detail the conferences with the chief men of the Ogalalla and Brulé bands of Sioux, and the treaty signed by them; and the later conferences held with the Cheyennes and Arapaphoes. The treaty secured the safety of the road up the Powder River Valley to Bozeman, Montana.
