Summary
The diary of an agent for the Iowa Copper Company records an 1837 trip from New York through the Midwest. He inspected the lead mines of Galena, Illinois and the copper diggings of Mineral Point, Wisconsin. Although he visited other mines in the area, the operations at Galena and Mineral Point were his chief convern.
He describes towns in Wisconsin and Illinois, as well as his journey home by way of Chicago, Lake Michigan, around Michigan by boat to Lake Erie, the Erie Canal to Utica, and finally by stage and train to his home in Waterford, New York. The author was interested in establishing Sunday schools and makes notes on them and the churches in the towns he visited.
