Organization
The collection is divided into four sections: 1. Religious Tract Society/United Society for Christian Literature; 2. Christian Literature Society; 3. Annual reports; 4. Scottish Committee of the United Society for Christian Literature. Within each area or country, the Archives have been divided into several groups of documents, such as committee minutes, and correspondence on specific subjects. For each group, the years for which documents are available are indicated.
Biographical / Historical Note
The United Society for Christian Literature was created in 1935 by the merger of the Religious Tract Society and the Christian Literature Society for India and Africa. It was joined in 1941/1942 by the London and Scottish committees of the Christian Literature Society for China.
Summary
The archives reflect the activities of the United Society for Christian Literature in large parts of the world in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The collection covers many fields, and is a rich source not only for missiologists, but also for historians, political scientists, anthropologists and economists.
